August 1, 2012

We only have 2 months left before we leave…it seems long and short at the same time. I look forward to seeing friends and family and sharing stories with them, but it still seems like there is so much we won’t have time to see or do or learn. I know the kids are ready to see our family again, but Evan is still always saying how she isn’t ready to leave. She is always asking when we are leaving for the next place and begging to stay even longer.

We ate the chicken I killed tonight…it was really yummy. They don’t really eat much meat around here, so to have a chicken dinner was a real treat and enjoyed by all of us. Most of the food they eat is pretty simple, but very good and there’s always plenty.

I think we want to have a horse when we get ready to start working on some land. The more Carter has worked with their horses here, and the more we read about farming with horses, the more we want to do it as well. Harrie and Mona have given us books and farming journals to read on the subject, and it just seems to make sense. We’ll definitely have to start with an experienced horse, considering our lack of experience, but I would be okay paying more for a horse that already knows how to work.
Mona and Harrie taking Tricia through the veg plot to deal with the weeds.

Staying here has really been a great experience for us…we’re learning tons and they have been great at bringing up ideas that we haven’t planned for or considered in thinking about what we want to do as far as farming and building. We just have one more week here, and my only regret is that we can’t stay longer.
