Things are still going quite well…We all worked on building a bee box today (well, actually Lisa and I sat and watched Ewen and Carter work on building it until we got a bit bored and went to plant some seeds instead). Last week Lisa went to a seminar/workshop thing about natural beekeeping in Sofia, so they are setting up their hive based on those principles. It seems pretty neat, and I think we would consider having bees ourselves one day.
We had decided to use one of our days off to travel to the big city of Popovo…not really huge, but much bigger than Osikovo. Unfortunately, Evan woke up that morning throwing up, so I ended up having to stay home with the kids. Carter headed in to town because we did need to use the computer (there’s a cafĂ© with free wifi there), and we wanted to get a few things from the shops there. He didn’t have a great day either, and wasn’t able to really get much done. Then the next day (our other day off), Elliot woke up at 4:00am throwing up as well. Our hosts were having guests over for “elevensies” and had invited us as well. I was also sick, so Carter had to go tell them that we couldn’t make it (can’t pick up the phone when you don’t have one, right?). Everyone seems to be doing better today though, so hopefully we’re all over with that bug.
I milked the goats last week! Of course I had to get up a bit earlier than usual to make the walk to their house and get there around 6:00am, but I didn’t really mind. It was a nice walk – still cool outside and on my way, I saw a fox scamper across the road. The milking went okay. It wasn’t too difficult…well, for one of the goats anyway. The other one doesn’t even really like her kids drinking her milk, much less us trying to take it. I’ve also been taking the goats for water and putting the kids up in the stable in the afternoons by myself. I was actually starting to feel like I was doing a pretty good job of it until today, when I only managed to get one out of the 5 kids shut up the first time. That left me having to catch the other 4 one by one to get them all in. Luckily they didn’t run to far off from their mums, and I had them all in after a few hectic minutes.
I am starting to get the hang of cooking on the wood stoves…so far I’ve made (with a good amount of success): biscuits, pancakes, cookies, and pizza. We had the pizzas last night while we watched Bambi for our “family movie night”. Carter and I both agreed that they were probably the best ones I’ve made…the crusts were just right. I think our hosts enjoyed the biscuits since they asked me to make them again today. We had a couple of discussions on what the difference is between a biscuit and a scone, but we haven’t come to a definitive answer as of yet.
The kids have found some playmates here as well. There is a family that lives next door to us that has 3 children. The oldest has stopped by the last few days to play with Evan and Elliot and yesterday, all three came over for a while and played. The only English any of them know is “hello”, “goodbye”, and they can count to 20. But it doesn’t matter…they have a great time playing together.
